Top riders all over the world compete for one of 18 coveted places at the World Cup Final in regional leagues: the Western European League, the Central European League, the Pacific League, the North American League, with the highest ranking non-league rider offered a place and three additional starting places also allocated. The title defender is given an automatic place in the following year’s final.

At the final, each combination rides the grand prix, which determines the starting order for the grand prix freestyle to music, from which the final result is decided.

Prior to Lottie Fry’s success in 2025, the last British winner of the World Cup dressage title was Charlotte Dujardin, who won back-to-back titles with Valegro in 2014 and 2015.
