‘Only time will tell’: half-blind abandoned pony fights for survival
‘Who knows what this poor mare had been through in her life’
News on the workings of The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, from rescuing horses who have become welfare cases to their involvement with hunting.
‘Who knows what this poor mare had been through in her life’
The filly was born to a mare who had been rescued from neglect
While visitor centres are closed and events cancelled, activities including sponsorship, donations, and art sales could help raise vital funds with support from the public
The charity is caring for 842 horses, with numbers expected to increase
The six-part series launches on Channel 4 on Saturday (21 March)
‘If the pony was to lose its balance when the vehicle went round a corner or stopped suddenly, he could have injured himself significantly’
The charity said the gelding is a ‘cheeky chap’ who is ‘full of fun’
Members of the public had been concerned about the horses’ welfare
‘As the light was fading and the water was rising we had to act quickly so we decided the best option to rescue the pony quickly was a tethered swim’
‘It was a high-risk rescue as there were areas that were so deep we had no choice but to swim’
One horse had to be put down and another had to have his eye removed after the woman who ran the rescue failed to seek veterinary treatment
This follows a dead mare discovered dumped on 1 February, and a seriously ill mare found abandoned on 19 January
In a separate incident an abandoned young pony found seriously ill had to be put down
‘It seems in this case it was an unfortunate set of circumstances that the young pony strayed too far into the flooding and got himself stuck’
The gelding was so badly injured he would not have been able to walk to the lane on his own and must have been transported
‘Our team works hard to rehabilitate rescue horses who in turn teach vulnerable children and adults to develop empathy and regulate emotional and physical behaviour’
