The Longines Royal International Horse Show (26-31 July) held on the hallowed turf of Hickstead and now in its 109th year, was packed full with action.
From showing to top class showjumping and from scurry ponies to the eventers’ challenge, there was something for everyone.
Ireland’s Billy Twomey was the winner of the big showjumping class, the King George V Cup worth €200,000, riding Lizziemary. This was the fourth international win for the Irish rider at this Royal International meeting having already netted the Bunn Leisure Salver, the British Speed Classic and the Bunn Leisure Vase.
Jayne Ross won the British Horse Society Supreme Ridden Horse Championship for the second year in a row riding the prolific hunter mare Time 2 Reflect.
The Underwood Supreme Ridden Pony Championship went to Olivia Bowen riding Golden Tasset.
Ireland’s David Simpson claimed the Templant Events Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Saturday riding Chessy 17 ahead of second-placed British rider Holly Smith (nee Gillott) riding Lammy Beach.
The German team of Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (Fibonacci 17), Janne Friederike Meyer (Goja 27), Patrick Stühlmeyer (Lacan 2) and Ludger Beerbaum (Chiara 222) finished on a score of just four faults to win the British leg of the Nations Cup. Ireland and Belgium shared second place with eight faults.
It was another win for the Irish in the Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge when Elizabeth Power took the £3,000 first prize with her experienced campaigner Doonaveeragh O One.
