Starting affiliated competition

  • However much experience you have of local shows, there’s something about going affiliated that means it’s a bit different — but these top tips should help you and your horse get started in affiliated competition

    • Consider buying a day ticket if you’re not sure whether you and your horse are ready for affiliated competition:

British Eventing (BE): £16 for a horse, £16 for a rider or £10 for a training ticket for BE80(T) for both horse and rider.

British Showjumping (BS): A ‘ticket to ride’ allows an unregistered horse and rider to compete in affiliated competitions for a small charge over the normal entry fee. You won’t receive prize-money, points or qualification places on a ticket. You can use as many tickets as you wish until you feel ready to register.

British Dressage (BD): You can enter any affiliated prelim without being a BD member.

    • Groom for someone at a couple of events before you compete yourself, so you can see what happens and it becomes less daunting.

    • Take advantage of the help that will be offered to you with affiliated membership.

For example, you can compete at BE80(T) on a £10 training ticket (price includes horse and rider, plus you have to pay the entry and start fee plus a £15 day pass) and get expert advice from an accredited trainer. And you can get training from BS too.
