Make sure you are prepared for when the temperature drops with a pair of the best thermal wellies. Thermal and insulated wellies are some of the best wellington boots available and are highly sought after by anyone spending a significant amount of time outside in the wet and cold winter weather.
Neoprene, which is the material used for making wetsuits, is commonly used to line winter wellies as it has strong insulating properties and is hard-wearing. Linings will vary in thickness, with a thicker lining offering more insulation. If you suffer from poor circulation or you always have cold feet, a great pair of thermal wellies will go a long way to helping your feet stay warm. All of the boots in this round-up benefit from neoprene insulation.

Aigle Parcours 2 Iso Wellingtons Boots
Fit: Unisex
Colours: Bronze
Sizes: UK 3½–14½
H&H Rating: 10/10, H&H Approved
Reasons to buy
- Warm neoprene lining (4.5mm)
- Unbelievably comfortable
- Hard wearing
- Good grip
Reasons to avoid
- Too warm for summer use
Aigle wellies, handmade in France from natural rubber, are in my experience the most comfortable available, they’re like walking on clouds . Their anti-fatigue design allows for all-day wear and walking and I have yet to find a more comfortable alternative.
The Parcours 2 Iso are premium, insulated boots offering exceptional comfort and warmth. The 4.5mm neoprene lining has been a god send on colder days and I have never had cold feet even when wearing standard socks and being outside when being outside for long periods of times in cold temperature. They allow for all-day wear without causing foot fatigue or aches, and they keep your feet warm in sub-zero temperatures. For those seeking a boot suitable for year-round use, Aigle offers a non-insulated pair with exactly the same features minus the neoprene lining – the Aigle Parcours 2.
These wellies have proven to be an excellent investment, maintaining their superb quality even after five years of consistent use. The minimal signs of wear suggest they will provide many more years of use. A key feature of the Aigle Parcours 2 Iso is the sole, which offers outstanding grip, allowing me to push the wheelbarrow through muddy, slippery gateways with ease. They are undoubtedly fit for purpose.
Yes, they’re expensive, but not the most expensive pair in this guide. They are a solid brand in terms of quality and should keep your feet warm and dry for years to come.

Le Chameau Vierzonord Neoprene-Lined Wellingtons
Fit: Ladies’ or men’s
Colours: Chameau green, black, dark brown or iconic green
Sizes: UK 2.5–9 (ladies’), UK 6–15 (men’s)
H&H Rating: 9/10, H&H Approved
Reasons to buy
- Lighter than they look
- Comfortable
- Neoprene-lined (3mm) for warmth and comfort
Reasons to avoid
- Found them tricky to take off
Le Chameau are at the top end of the market; and the most expensive pair of insulated wellies in this guide. They were the first to use neoprene in wellies, and to add calf adjustment and a vulcanised natural rubber, which they say is softer and more durable than rivals.
Georgia Guerin, H&H’s deputy website editor, tested these wellington boots daily for general horse care and frequent walks across different terrains during autumn, winter, and spring. While she considers them excellent boots, she notes a distinct lack of structure. They are significantly more flexible and “floppy” than other boots tested. This extreme flexibility offers excellent freedom of movement but presents a minor challenge when putting them on quickly or in low light, and it results in less support around the ankle and calf compared to other models.
These boots are warm – significantly warmer than the jersey-lined Le Chameaus, which Georgia describes as “bearable in the cold if you have good circulation”. They have a thinner neoprene lining than others in this guide, but she says “the way the shaft clings to you calf does help keep heat in”.
The wellies are highly popular and have a strong following for good reasons. Georgia advises that when choosing a premium pair of wellington boots, you should decide whether you prefer a butter-soft, flexible style (like the Le Chameaus) or a structured, supportive fit (like the Aigles), as both types offer outstanding quality. If you have particularly poor circulation or feel the cold you should look for a welly that has a thicker neoprene lining to help keep your feet warm.
Ultimately, if you wear wellies often, investing in a high-quality pair is worthwhile to avoid the cost and inconvenience of buying replacements frequently.

The Original Muck Boot Company Arctic Sport II Tall Boots
Fit: Ladies’
Colours: 12 options
Sizes: UK 3–9
H&H Rating: 8/10
Reasons to buy
- Warm
- Comfortable
Reasons to avoid
- No adjustability on the calf
Muck boots have a distinctive style that tends to divide opinion—people either love them or hate them. The Original Muck Boot Company is highly rated for comfortable footwear offering 100% waterproof protection, and versatility in muddy, cold conditions and these boots didn’t disappoint.
These boots offer exceptional warmth and comfort, thanks to a cosy fleece lining and a 5mm neoprene inner boot. A stretch-fit top-line binding ensures a snug fit around your legs, effectively sealing out cold air and retaining warmth. These are excellent for working outdoors, providing both warmth and unrestricted movement. Furthermore, the boots feature a moulded midsole for support and a rugged outsole with a reliable tread pattern. This tread performed well in various challenging conditions, from navigating puddles and wet, muddy gateways to icy yards.
Georgia tested these wellies and she said they are supportive and felt just like wearing trainers they were so comfortable. She was also grateful for the soft fleece lining and 5mm neoprene during the cold winter months.

Harry Hall Mud Boots Neoprene Wellies
Fit: Ladies’
Colours: Navy or black
Sizes: UK 3–8
H&H Rating: 9/10, H&H Approved
Reasons to buy
- Warm and flexible neoprene upper
- Usually discounted
- Good grip
Reasons to avoid
- Calf isn’t adjustable
- Shorter height than other wellies tested
As the most affordable wellies in this guide, the Harry Hall neoprene boots deliver excellent value, surprising levels of comfort, warmth, and superior grip. The entire upper is constructed from 5mm neoprene, making them wonderfully flexible and warm, while maintaining enough structure for easy on-and-off use. They stand out as a great quality option at a very reasonable price.
A minor point to note about the Harry Hall Mud boots is their slightly shorter height compared to other wellies reviewed. However, this is unlikely to pose a problem unless you frequently encounter deep water.
In terms of warmth, these score pretty high, due to the 5mm neoprene upper. The calf isn’t adjustable, but if you have a tight budget but want a comfortable warm pair of wellies, the Mud boots are a great purchase. In fact, it even gives the similar but more well-known boots from The Original Muck Boot Company a run for their money.

The Original Muck Boot Company Women’s Adjustable Chore Tall Boots
Fit: Ladies’
Colours: Black
Sizes: UK 3–9
H&H Rating: 9/10, H&H Approved
Reasons to buy
- Stretchy neoprene cuff
- Very insulated
- Rear adjustable gusset extends up to 7cm
Reasons to avoid
- Very chunky
- Not as stylish as other wellies
- May be too warm for some
A redesigned take on the iconic Muck Boot Chore for women, these wellies feature a fully waterproof, adjustable gusset at the back, which extends up to 7cm. This allows for extra room and a customised fit around the calf. However, these are the chunkiest boots we tested, so if style is one of your priorities these might not be the right choice for you.
These wellies offer excellent grip thanks to their chunky soles. The form-fitting interior ensures they don’t move around on your feet. They are also breathable yet warm. Furthermore, the wide calf design makes them easy to slip on and off, even over waterproof trousers, without pulling your socks down.
They offered great warmth with 5mm neoprene which meant I only needed to wear normal socks even in freezing temperatures and I didn’t suffer with cold feet. I would recommend these boots if you suffer from poor circulation or cold feet.

Colours: Iconic green or black
Sizes: UK 2½–9, with three width options (ladies’), UK 6–15, with three width options (men’s)
H&H Rating: 9/10, H&H Approved
Reasons to buy
- Choice of three calf options
- Comfortable
- Two-year warranty
- Supple and flexible rubber
Reasons to avoid
- Higher price tag but, they’re a seriously technical boot
The Le Chameau Chasseur Wellington boots, while among the most expensive we’ve tested, justify their price with their exceptional quality. They even double as suitable attire for a country pub lunch. These boots are an excellent choice if you require ample space for wide calves or for tucking in waterproof trousers. A standout feature is the full-length waterproof zip, which not only provides more structure to the shaft but also makes them easier to put on and take off compared to other styles from the same brand. If you’re looking for a seriously high-quality wellington boot, these are highly recommended.
Crucially, the Chasseur proved to be a tough, durable, and completely waterproof boot, even after enduring strenuous daily use for horse care and dog walking. As Le Chameau is a brand renowned for quality, these are built to last for years. The 3mm neoprene lining offered ample warmth even when the temperature dropped below 0, making this a seriously technical boot.
They have many similar features to the Le Chameau Vierzonord, which is also adjustable but doesn’t offer different widths from the outset.

Should you size up in wellies?
You should buy your normal size in wellington boots, make sure they fit snugly without being too tight. Make sure you look at the manufacturers sizing charts and if possible try on your wellies with the socks you would normally wear.
Can you wear wellies in the snow?
Wellingtons are great for the snow as they are waterproof. If you are looking for a pair for cold weather make sure you opt for insulated ones with a neoprene lining to help keep your feet warm and ensure they have a good tread and grip.
Why do my feet still get cold in insulated boots?
If you’re wearing thermal boots, it could be that you have too many pairs of socks on. You need to make sure you have enough room for your socks and any insulation to trap heat effectively and allow for circulation.
